New in Magics 3.0

Magics-3.0 is the first version offering a Python 3 Interface (but still keeping compatibility to Python 2). We welcome your feedback to improve it.

The handling of NetCDF/CF-convention has been simplified, enabling easier visualisation.

The support of gradients colours has also been improved and now Magics supports the use of predefined palettes: please have a look at them!. Metview 5 offers now a nice editor to pre-visualise the colours.

What is Magics

Magics is the latest generation of the ECMWF's meteorological plotting software and can be either accessed directly through its Python or Fortran interfaces or by using Metview.

Magics supports the plotting of contours, wind fields, observations, satellite images, symbols, text, axis and graphs (including boxplots). Data fields to be plotted may be presented in various formats, for instance GRIB 1 and 2 code data, gaussian grid, regularly spaced grid and fitted data. GRIB data is handled via ECMWF's ecCodes software. Input data can also be in BUFR and NetCDF format or retrieved from an ODB database. The produced meteorological plots can be saved in various formats, such as PostScript, EPS, PDF, GIF, PNG and SVG.

Magics uses the Terralib library in cooperation with Brazil's INPE.

  1. Hello,

    How can we draw borders of the countries? I have tried to do it on ecgate based on the following example but it was not successful.

    http://old.ecmwf.int/publications/manuals/magics/magplus/manuals/html/Coastlines_coastlines_magml_flat_tables.html

                map_administrative_boundaries = 'on'
                map_administrative_boundaries_countries_list = 'austria'
                map_administrative_boundaries_style = 'dash'
                map_administrative_boundaries_colour = 'automatic'
                map_administrative_boundaries_thickness = '1'

    Many thanks in advance,

    kind regards

    Istvan Ihasz

  2. Hello,

    In order to draw the administrative boundaries of a country, you have to refer to it by its ISO code in 3 letters , if I am right Austria is AUS.

    map_administrative_boundaries_countries_list = 'AUS'

    1. Please have a look at the Gallery . If you see a plot you want to reproduce you can click on the plot and you should find out how to generate the plot. There will be also links to download example codes.
